More than 59,000 people die from rabies every year, 99% of which are a result of exposure to an infected domestic dog. <\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabies <\/strong>remains endemic in more than 150 countries. Over 95% of the 59,000 human rabies deaths each year occur in Africa and Asia as a result of being bitten by an infected dog, with 80% of cases occurring in poorer rural areas. The 2023 World Rabies Day theme, \u201cRabies: All for 1, One Health for All\u201d (in reference to Alexandre Dumas\u2019s famous novel), focused on collaboration, equality, and the strengthening of health systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this occasion, Dr Terence Scott, Director of Programs at the Global Alliance for Rabies Control<\/a> (GARC), gave us an interview. Terence has worked in more than 15 Low- and Middle-Income countries to support their efforts towards achieving rabies elimination. He thus understands the contexts and needs faced by resource-constrained rabies endemic countries and has the field-experience to develop appropriate tools and programs that are both sustainable and practical. He is the World Rabies Day team lead and is involved in supporting stakeholders and driving advocacy in various organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
